Mix Tapes!
December 17th 2007 06:44
The art of the mix tape has been much spoken about in terms of great nostalgia. And rightly so. I’m one of those many who would spend a good deal of time, sitting by the radio waiting for something worthy of my latest tape.
Originally a straightforward process, my mix tapes began to move towards being pure works of art – Holding down the record button halfway would allow you to effectively record half new stuff half old, like a fade out effect. I interspersed half songs with other songs, vocal snippets and miscellaneous sound. It was an imperfect art, and one that represented something about the very time and place I was when I weak making them.
I don’t make mix tapes any more. For one thing my tape player broke and I never bought another. For a second thing, I have no desire to relive the glory days of the Mix tape. They belong to that other world, a world where my roof was covered in glow in the dark stars, my dog was a Dalmatian and my carpet had blots of plasticine in it. John Howard was copping flack for the GST, Clinton was America’s President and East Timor was the major conflict.
I have never discarded my tapes though, instead am keeping them until the day I find a way to convert the whole thing to MP3. The old meets the new as well it should. Itunes, Limewire and LastFM are the present, and it would be foolish to wait until they are gone to recognize this, with the sad sigh of boring old nostalgia.

Warm sound due to natural analogue compression.
But that was long ago.

Oh I wish I had kept my old ones! How sentimental.

What a great topic. I loved creating mix tapes and then listening to them endlessly....I still have mine, I can't bear to part with them, they bring back so many memories

That was my first experiences with music as I wasn't around for the time of vinyl and tape recorders my dad used to use.
One thing I know is that my CD's wouldn't be as good or get as much props if I didn't grow up mixing tapes.
These days a 'mixtape' is actually like a demo for rappers.
But I will always have my old stash of cassettes.
