Banksy Spotting
June 2nd 2008 00:01
When I went to England, I was expecting to be able to find Banksy here, there and everywhere. Despite being in London, one of the favourite Bansky spotting locations, this simply isn't the case, as most of Banksy's work is confined to dark alleys, tunnels, corners and other places that your everyday London tourist is unlikley to wander down. Additionally, anything that IS big and public gets taken away so quickly that you'd never see it.
With this in mind, as well as the fact that many of Banksys works have now seriously eroded, or simply dissapeared it might seem that gonig ff Banksy spotting is simply a waste of time. My girlfreind and i, over a couple of cool London nights went around, trying to find a few - we found two (she swears three - claiming a large wall 'slodge' was rat shaped). Despite this low rate of success, and degraded quality of the pieces, it seems that Banksy Spotting, like life itself, is not so much about the destination, but the journey.
You might not find a great deal of Banksy while Banksy spotting but you will find some interesting places, people and things. You'll have a nice walk, a few good experiences, and basically just enjoy yourself for a few hours. Keep your head about you, but if you're even in London with nothing to do, a bit of Banksy spotting will see you having fun, exploring the ity and finding something new.
